New music service launched

Inspiring music for years ahead is the ambition of the new Central Bedfordshire Music service which launches today (1 July).

The council controversially axed its current music service in a bid to save money earlier this year, which met with a huge backlash from teachers and parents.

Central Bedfordshire Music this week announced that Chris Jones will be taking the role of music director for the new service.

Chris is a talented musician in his own right, and it is hoped that through his passion for music and the new service he will inspire children and young people to develop their musical talents.

Executive member for children's services at Central Beds Councillor Mark Versallion said: "The vision of the service is to give children and young people the opportunity to become the best musicians they possibly can.

"Playing music at every level is a fantastic opportunity for young people. It helps them make friends, develop new skills and is great for their self esteem."

It is hoped the new package will strengthen opportunities for group learning and increase the minimum number of guaranteed lessons in schools from 30 to 33 a year.

The authority says a new pricing structure for September 2011 has made lesson prices competitive, while the cost of attending Music Centres in Ampthill, Biggleswade, Dunstable and Leighton Buzzard has been set to ensure that more young people will be attracted to use them.

More developments are expected as the new music service is deliberately designed to constantly evolve, following a five year plan in order to ensure it continues to match families' needs and expectations.
