Saturday Morning Music Centres

Saturday Morning Music Centres are held in five locations in the Youth Music area each Saturday during school term-times. These are in Ampthill, Bedford, Biggleswade, Dunstable, and Leighton Buzzard. Saturday Morning Music Centres are also held in Luton and Milton Keynes. They offer a wide range of musical activities to enhance the school curriculum.

Each music centre has its own timetable, but most include: orchestras, bands, chamber music, instrumental and recorder ensembles, choirs, jazz groups, aural training and theory classes. They cater for students of all ages and abilities from aged 5-18, and also those who have left school can participate, providing they do not prevent a school pupil from taking part.

All music students benefit greatly from a period of study at one of these centres, in whatever areas they choose to participate.

Benefits of joining a Music Centre include;

  • Improving your performing and sight-reading
  • Meeting new people
  • Seeing and hearing other groups perform
  • Performing in concerts each term

In May half-term each year a grand jamboree of players from all the Music Centres in Bedfordshire takes place, under the baton of Ian Smith, at Redborne Upper School in Ampthill.

If you are interested in any of these Music Centres then please discuss it with your music teacher or contact the relevant County Music Service;
